Fleeting stories about Bob’s grandfather painted a vivid picture in his mind—a picture that was about to be challenged. With most of the family photos lost to time,  the few he was about to discover hinted at a man far different from the grandfather in Bob's memory.

One day, a  packet arrived in the mail. Inside, a treasure trove of documents and photos his aging aunt thought Bob would enjoy having. Among the photos was his grandfather, standing tall with a huge ocean-caught fish. In another, he sat on a boat, the sea stretching behind him. The documents were even more surprising. A 1922 land claim for 160 acres in the California desert revealed a new truth: his grandparents were homesteaders.

How could these two visions be compatible? Bob searched his mind for the stories he'd heard, but all he could recall was the tragic accident that had claimed his grandfather's life. He knew he had to delve deeper to find the legacy that, until now, had eluded him.
